Power electronics test equipment: practical helper or inflexible load?
At SAXOGY POWER ELECTRONICS the name says it all. The specialists from Chemnitz have been successfully working with power electronics for 19 years.
Where something was once burned to create movement, today semiconductors convert forms of electrical energy so that high voltages or currents can be used efficiently in households, in electromobility and in industry. Power electronics is the steam engine of the 21st century, but it also needs to be tamed. Therefore testing equipment.
These test equipment series are used to test power electronics or semiconductor controls (gate drivers) and are tailored entirely to the intended application of the respective customer. The devices, systems, electronic components and safety concepts designed and manufactured in-house impress with their high quality, long service life and maximum safety.
Did you know …
… that efficiencies of over 99% are possible using power electronics?
A diesel engine, on the other hand, only converts a third of the fuel's energy into propulsion power, while the rest is lost as heat.
Invisible danger
Personal safety is a topic in power electronics that can be discussed again and again. While you can see the fire in a steam engine, feel a hot line up close or detect the movement of connecting rods before you reach into it, the dangers of power electronics are largely hidden.
The experienced power electronics technician knows where he can touch things and where he can't, but with increasing experience so does routine and carelessness. Both are virtues that lead to death in power electronics.
And this is where one of SAXOGY's specialist areas comes into play: safe testing equipment.
When it comes to safety, there are countless standards that describe the methods to be used. When implementing it into a real solution, the standard must be interpreted and this leads to different solution approaches.
How are standards interpreted?
While one manufacturer interprets these standards economically to their advantage, others exaggerate the issue of safety to such an extent that flexible use of the testing equipment is hardly possible. The former leads to devices that only guarantee security on paper - the latter leads to unusable devices, which in everyday life usually only fulfill their purpose through manipulation. A safe test tool should be one thing above all else: an aid.
„Our approach is: the more I get used to the device and don’t see it as a burden, the more I accept the small limitations that hinder my work due to the safe functions“, explains Konrad Domes, CEO der SAXOGY POWER ELECTRONICS GmbH.
Make friends with safety through quality
SAXOGY has come up with a lot of ideas so that a user can get used to their safe testing device. The solutions are well thought out and practical. The workmanship is of such high quality that you not only see it, but also feel it, and high-quality devices and materials are simply better used and better accepted.
Of course, this also includes the human-machine interface (HMI). The user uses this control panel to communicate their needs to the device or, conversely, the device tells the user the current status.
Interface in a slim design and pleasant to the touch
The few square centimeters of the HMI are the most touched of the entire system. It stands to reason that the surface and the virtual presentation behind it should be of high quality.
A perfect component was found for this with the powerful KN Controls 700 Plug & Play from Kraus & Naimer.
The virtual surfaces can be created yourself with little effort. The high-resolution glass display with multi-touch PCAP touchscreen, the slim depth and the completely closed housing make the device look good anywhere.
The M22 single hole mounting on the back offers a high level of flexibility during assembly. Power supply and data transfer take place via an RJ45 connection and Power-over-Ethernet network technology.
At SAXOGY, all testing equipment is now available with an HMI.
Until the project really fits
The four touch panel series from Kraus & Naimer offer a lot of freedom when it comes to installation and integration. They communicate with a wide variety of common protocols and are available with these software options/programming environments:
- JMobile: Visualization software for industrial automation and edge management
- CODESYS: Soft PLC according to IEC 61131-3
- WEB application: Chromium (HTML5 connection to control visualization)
There is no lack of know-how and manpower at SAXOGY, but that is not the case in all companies. In this case, the Kraus & Naimer application team supports its customers in setting up their project (external engineering) and helps with problems until everything is running.
„I discovered the Kraus & Naimer Plug & Play panels at a trade fair and was immediately impressed by their elegant feel and smooth operation. It was clear to me here that the existing devices would be replaced!
As part of the loan test, all colleagues and decision-makers were convinced.
Since the JMobile software was also available free of charge for 30 days, I created a new project that made a direct comparison between the previous and future solution possible.
We have now even integrated the panels into products that previously worked without them – because it’s simply nicer!” reportsKonrad Rößler, Electronic & Software Development SAXOGY POWER ELECTRONICS.
We would be happy to take a look at your application project together:
